I am a firm believer in eating the food of your roots. Meaning, of your
ancestors. That is, if they had any food or just ate potatoes, for
example. My taste in food runs towards theMediterranean. My ancestors were Sephardic Jews, brought to the Mediterranean
coast by their Arab Masters. I'm sure we worked as their accountants
and such. One day, sitting in one of the gardens near the old palace in
Seville, I had a strong feeling that a Jewish ancestor had sat there
before, taking a break from his work.
When the Inquisition came, my ancestors got kicked out of Spain and
walked across Europe to Eastern Europe and the Ukraine. My grandmother
told us those stories that she was told.
I grew up with Jewish cooking. I meanAskenazic Jewish cooking. The Ashkenazics came from Eastern Europe. I am told that in Israel today, the Ashkenazics Jews feel quite superior to the Sephardics. the Sephardics, like me, have olive skin, love to dance, eat, are seen to be lazy and party a lot. On the contrary, the Ashkenazi's get things done and are in their head a lot.
Well, my whole family is a mixture, so I grew up eating dried-out brisket, no offense to my Mother or Grandmother. I just knew there had to be better food to eat.
In the family portrait, my Mother and I have the most Sephardic traits. We have olive skin, look Spanish, love to dance, have fun, and are not so good at business.
I have other family members who seem completely the opposite. I think I
got a lot of the Sephardic blood.
Then there's my theory of Sepharic-Ashkenazi family systems. The Ashkenazi
are the most successful in business. Like my father. Also the most
uptight and rigid. Sorry, Dad, you know I love you anyway. I think this casuses a lot of family fights.
Once, a guy on a bus from Southern Spain started to speak to me in
Spanish. He said I looked exactly like women in Southern Spain. I was very flattered.
